Winter Weather Alert

Updated: Jan 19

The National Weather Service and Baltimore City's Office of Emergency Management predict we will have about 1-2 inches of snow.

At the beginning of this week, temperatures will be below freezing, so our main problem will be ice. Please use extreme caution.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade is cancelled for tomorrow due to extreme cold weather and treacherous conditions.

Here are some tips on storm related services and what you can do:

  • Pipes. Avoid burst pipes by insulating exposed pipes with a towel and leave a slight drip in your lowest level faucet.

  • Emergency Kit. Make sure you have water, flashlights, and other necessities in case this becomes a multi-day event or in the event of a power outage.

  • Check on your neighbors. Please check on vulnerable adults and families to make sure they have what they need. If there are any problems, you can report them to us.

  • Sidewalks and walkways. Shovel your walk and your neighbor's walk especially if they are an older adult. When shoveling, put salt down on the walkway.

  • Street Plowing. Please have patience as the Department of Transportation plows the streets. The crews will be out in full force and will start plowing emergency routes, then main roads, secondary roads will follow, and side roads will be last.

  • Trash and Recycling Pick Up. Please have patience with the Department of Public Works for trash and recycling pick up. While the alleys were also pre-treated prior to this storm, the temperatures will be so low which will it make it very difficult for our crews to drive in. We will update you on service interruptions and make up days.

  • Fallen Trees. For fallen trees, please contact 311 first and then send us the confirmation number so that we can escalate.

  • Water Main Breaks. As the temperature changes rapidly, our aging infrastructure tends to break. If there is a water main break, please report to 311 and send us the confirmation number so that we can monitor and escalate.

  • School Closings. While tomorrow (Monday) is a holiday to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Baltimore City Public Schools will let us know if there are delays and cancelations for Tuesday. The snow day policy is the first three snow days are actually snow days. After that, it is virtual learning. You can find the policy here.

  • Plan your snow day. While the temperatures will be extremely low, if you really need to go outside and let some energy out, here are our snow sledding hills in our district: Wyman Park Dell on the N. Charles Street side, Clifton Park near Harford Road and St. Lo Drive by the baseball fields, Northeast side of Lake Montebello between the lake and Harford Road, and Stony Run lower meadow entrance on Craycombe and Tudor Arms.

  • Winter Shelter. If you or someone you know needs shelter during these extreme cold conditions, please call 443-984-9540.

As always, our office is here to help. Please contact us if you need assistance.
