Tomorrow, the Housing and Economic Development Committee Hearing will have the final committee vote on the Rental Dwelling Health and Safety Enforcement Act. I introduced this bill last November, and we’ve had two hearings and a lot of work to make it perfect. Thank you to the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and all stakeholders for their time and effort in working on this! The bill will allow for the creation of a rental property receivership to go after the most egregious violators of the rental and housing codes. It also requires for DHCD to notify all non-owner occupied property owners of their requirement to obtain a rental license, and creates a rental inspector licensing program to hold the third-party rental inspectors accountable and ensure they have correct information. This bill will also streamline the rental licensing process. It ensures that all renters are living in healthy and safe conditions. You can read the legislation, its amendments and the agencies' reports here.
Please note that a slightly revised version will be introduced and voted on during tomorrow's voting session.
