The National Weather Service and our city's Office of Emergency Management predict 10-12 inches of snow Saturday night into Sunday morning, and then frigid temperatures and ice. It will be a very cold and snowy week.
Please follow these steps to prepare, and please spread the word. We will send another update tomorrow before the storm, and please make sure to keep checking our social media and the Office of Emergency Management social media for updates.
Pipes. Avoid burst pipes by leaving a slight drip in your lowest-level faucet. Turn off exterior faucets, and insulate exposed pipes with a towel.
Emergency Kit. Make sure you have water, flashlights, and other necessities if this becomes a multi-day event or if there's a power outage.
Check on your neighbors. Please check on vulnerable adults and families to make sure they have what they need, and please report any problems to us.
All cars parked on Emergency Routes must MOVE by NOON on Saturday, January 24th. City-owned garages will be available at no charge, and several of our schools are offering their parking lots for residents, including MERVO and Montebello School. Poly/Western is also an option. A complete list can be found here. You can find out where the emergency routes are here. Please let your neighbors know that if they do not move their car, it will be towed and relocated.
Bring Your Pets Inside. Dogs and cats get cold too! Please bring them inside during the storm. If you are concerned about a neighborhood cat or dog, please contact 311 for Animal Control and send us the confirmation number.
Sidewalks and walkways. It is Baltimore City law to shovel your sidewalk and walkway. Please also take care of your neighbor's walkway, especially if they are an older adult. When shoveling, put salt down on the walkway.
Street Plowing. Please have patience as the Department of Transportation plows the streets. The crews are out in force, starting with emergency routes, then main roads, then secondary roads, and then side roads.
Trash and Recycling Pick Up: Please also have patience with the Department of Public Works for trash and recycling pick up. Currently, all trash and recycling services are planned for next week as normal. We will send information if that changes.
Fallen Trees: For fallen trees, please contact 311 first, and then send us the confirmation number so we can escalate.
Water Main Breaks: As the temperatures change so rapidly, our aging infrastructure tends to break. If there is a water main break, please report to 311 and send us the confirmation number so that we can monitor and escalate, as well as communicate with impacted residents.
School Closings: Baltimore City Public Schools announced that all activities are closed this weekend. There will be an additional notice if it is determined that schools will be closed on Monday.
Plan Your Snow Day Fun. Here are our snow sledding hills in our district: Wyman Park Dell on the N. Charles Street side, Clifton Park near Harford Road and St. Lo Drive by the baseball fields, Northeast side of Lake Montebello between the lake and Harford Road, and Stony Run lower meadow entrance on Craycombe and Tudor Arms.
Winter Shelter. Several of our Recreation Centers will be available for winter shelter and warming centers. Contact 311 or 443-984-9540 to get into one of these shelters or inform Homeless Services that someone is in need of shelter. We want everyone protected from this drastic cold we are about to experience.
