Remembering The Firefighters We Lost

January 24th marked the third anniversary of the tragic loss of Lt. Butrim, Lt. Sadler, and FF/EMT Lacayo, who heroically entered a vacant home that collapsed on them. Their sacrifice led to vital changes in the fire department to protect their colleagues and brought renewed focus to eliminating vacant properties in Baltimore. The vacant property crisis has deeply affected residents for generations, hindering progress in our city. I think of these firefighters and their families every day. The most meaningful way to honor their sacrifice —and the lives impacted by this crisis — is to act with urgency to resolve it. While progress has been made, there is still so much to do. I look forward to working with my colleagues and the Administration to ensure we do this quickly, and do it right.
