My Statement on Kilmar's Release

Last Friday, Kilmar Abrego Garcia was required to check in with ICE after he was released from detention the previous night. That morning, he was able to leave his check-in at the Baltimore ICE facility and will be working with his lawyers on the next steps in the fight. I’m overjoyed that Kilmar Abrego Garcia will be able to spend time with his family, and I’m grateful to the residents who joined us that morning to show support for him and his family.
The fight is not over. Thousands of residents across the states have already been snatched by ICE and are separated from their families, and may not spend the holidays together. The behavior of ICE and this federal administration is nothing short of evil.
We will continue to fight this injustice. Residents can help. Please consider getting trained to either accompany someone to their ICE check-in, become a standby guardian, expand the education opportunities for residents to know their rights, and be prepared with all the tips on what to do if ICE comes to your neighborhood. Contact our office to learn about these opportunities or get involved with the many groups doing this work, including CASA, Indivisible, Rapid Response Network, Eyes on ICE, and others. We need everyone in this fight.
