In response to Mayor Scott's statement on supporting Baltimore's immigrant community, Councilwoman Ramos responded on January 23rd, 2025 and said the following:
"I wholeheartedly support Mayor Scott in Baltimore City’s dedication to safeguarding our immigrant community. The city’s current policies, which prevent our agencies from requesting, sharing, or cooperating with ICE, are the most effective way to protect the safety of our families.
Families who have come to Baltimore seeking a better life are integral to our communities. No matter where you’re from or what language you speak, you are welcome in Baltimore. We will continue to support you as best we can so that you feel strengthened and reassured.
Our immigrant community has made significant contributions to the city. According to the New American Economy, immigrants in the Baltimore metro area contribute $4.2 billion in taxes and have a total spending power estimated at $9.3 billion. Baltimore’s immigrant community includes people from Central and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and many other countries. It is the only area of population growth in our city, which has grown by over 70% in the past decade.
In addition to contributing to economic and population growth, immigrants are community leaders and household providers. Like everyone else, our immigrant neighbors work tirelessly to provide for their families while enriching our social and cultural lives.
I’m proud to stand beside them and fight against the fear and hate brought on by the new federal administration. Please support your immigrant neighbors in any way you can.
